C’mon, tell me you’re dying to know how I got my very first gig on the latest issue of Her World. You don’t wanna know? Well I’m gonna tell you anyway, because while I’ve seen my name in print many times before, I’ve never been as excited as I was about this one.
Dylan from Her World was doing a story about online bakeries that do customized cakes, so asked if I wanted to be featured (erm, “No”?). I could come up with any design I wanted, so I dug up this idea I’ve had for a long time — this Badgley Mischka shoe that I’ve seen countless brides wear on stylemepretty.com.
It’s called the Randee sandal and it has the prettiest ruffles which, with a bit of patience, can be replicated in sugar. So I took out my oval cutter and started playing around with the layers until I got this…
To represent the shoe straps, I cut out long stripes and attached them onto the bottommost tier. I was gonna do it in the same pale peach colour as the photo, but another bakery in the same story already took pink. So I went for green instead, my favourite colour.

The Her World photographer did an amazing job, making my cake look like some Frank Gehry building. I’m so proud of it! But husband Z took this straight-on shot, which I’m loving too. Here’s to many more press clippings to come

Hi Pau Lin!
Don’t know if you remember me, but I was a lowly intern way back in 2006, with Life! and Urban. I’m the tall one that hung out with Corrie, Grace and Eisen. I was always in awe that you were always nice to me, despite being a veteran writer and one famous one at that (everywhere I go, I see your news clippings on restaurant fronts
).
Am doing a little wedding research right now and came across your site. Mine is a long way away (July 2012), but I think that I’d like a real cake for my wedding, not a styrofoamy one with a little cream slice
There was a recent cable TV broadcast of a US wedding cake competition and the designs were simply outrageous and some were OTT but the amount of WORK that went in was crazy.
I do hope you’ll be doing more wedding cakes in the months and years to come!
I’ll recommend you to my friends, we’re all at the stage where dresses need to be strategically recycled because there’re so many. I’m such a long way away, but I’m already planning (a bridezilla in the making for certain). I think it rocks that you’re doing what you’re passionate about. I’m still on my way there.
hey hannah, of course i remember you! the pretty, happy one who gave me a killer neck massage at one point, yes? wow, how have you been?! where are you working now? PM me please at tepial@gmail.com.
let me know if you want me to make your wedding cake next year! it’ll be fun. start looking for designs now. as far as bridezillas are concerned (i was one), it is never too early to plan!
and yes, please please recommend me to your friends. i am in need of more customers!
ok, hear from you soon
Soooooo gorgeous!! I like the straight-on shot too. And that is the perfect shade of green for a cake. You make me wish I’m getting married too!
It’s funny, I’m beginning to translate everyday designs into cake designs too. Like I’d see a gorgeous ceiling light or fabulous dress, and immediately begin to envision how it would transform into a cake!
Err.. no, unfortunately my real life skills are nowhere near being able to do it!! LOL
Wow this is gorgeous! I love you site and your cake
How much advance notice do you need for a wedding cake like this?
The shoe is beautiful but if you ask me, I’d rather have the cake!
haha thanks!!
